Considered the birthplace of the modern idea of nature conservation, Walden Pond inspired Henry David Thoreau's influential environmental text, "Walden." A National Historic Landmark, the pond today is the centerpiece of a lovely 400-acre State Reservation, where visitors can canoe, fish, hike, picnic, and even ski during the winter months. It lies about 20 miles northwest of downtown Boston, just south of Emerson Playground.
